Restaurant La Porte Royale

Authentic Portuguese dishes can be found at this slightly out-of-the-way spot in La Rochelle, which even offers two prices for a standard portion and a Portuguese portion: an excellent idea. The octopus and bacalhau are superb. The desserts are also generous. The wine is reasonably priced. However, beware of the owner, who is prone to very violent outbursts towards seated customers; he insists that everyone eats strictly from their own plate and forbids anyone from tasting from others' plates… claiming that this would jeopardize his restaurant's revenue. Ridiculous and a real shame.

We walked past this restaurant and appreciated its authentic charm, so we decided to give it a try and we weren't disappointed! The owner who looked after us was very friendly and offered great advice. His wife cooks beautifully and took us on a culinary journey. It was perfect 👍 Bacalhau à Brás and Francesinha were delicious

The bacalhau à bràs was good. However, apart from the salt cod, which is a bit pricey, this dish is essentially made with eggs and potatoes. €20 for a standard plate seemed a bit expensive to us.

The staff were very unpleasant and threw us out, and the food was disgusting.

We had a wonderful time at this establishment. The food is truly delicious, with flavorful, homemade dishes! Kudos to the chef! A delightful experience, so comforting on a gray/rainy day! We had the grilled chicken and the bacalhau à gras, a real treat! We'd already tried the pasteis de nata from the market, so we opted for the pudim, also an excellent choice 😋 Thank you to the very pleasant and friendly owners. For a good restaurant, this is an excellent choice. The food is delicious; the owner and his wife are charming and welcoming. It's wise to book ahead as the restaurant fills up quickly.
